Chili Champions!

We are truly honored for the ways Structures has been recognized over the last few months.  Upon entering our office, you'll see Prism Awards for 2011 Builder of the Year for Customer Service and 2011 Best Single Family Home in the $750,000-$1,000,000 price range...and now we're pleased to announce that among those awards, Structures Building Company holds the title of GRAND CHAMPION for the Charleston Trident Home Builder's Association Chili Cook Off!

Builder's First Source recently hosted the CTHBA annual competition, and several members of the association came out to cook their best chili on site.  The event helped raise financial support for Tricounty Family Ministries, and we were excited to support our community in this way. Special guest judges for the Chili Cook Off were jimihatt, leader of Guerrilla Cuisine, an "underground supper club" here in Charleston and Ellen Stebbins, Co-Founder of The Lowcountry Business Network.  Check out a few more photos of this fun event below:

Everyone Smile in 1..2..3!

We recently ventured out of the office and off our project sites for a Structures family photo session at Mt. Pleasant's Memorial Waterfront Park! We were able to get some great shots - we do, after all, live in the city that was ranked by Travel + Leisure Magazine as America's 2nd Most Attractive City. I think you'll agree that we were robbed of Travel + Leisure's #1 spot as you enjoy some outtakes from our day :

Who knows what on earth everyone is doing in this picture! Steve and Amy are having a staring contest, Deb looks like she's all in Dave's face and Justin just looks totally bored and decided to text someone while waiting for every one to get ready to say "cheese"!
Marty needs reindeer antlers on to complete the pose!
Striking a pose.
No words can capture the emotion here. . . :)
And finally...I think we have a keeper!

Last week, we celebrated a great milestone as a company – our 12th anniversary! This is an exciting time to be a home builder, and we are thankful to our wonderful clients, architects, trade contractors and suppliers, and everyone who supports the work of Structures! Happy Anniversary Steve – here’s to many more years of success!

2011 Prism Award Winners!

Just as we had hoped, the 2011 Prism Awards held on Friday, November 11th did not disappoint! The 23rd annual awards celebration is hosted by the Charleston Trident Home Builders Association and is a gathering of the best home builders and real estate agents in Charleston. These top companies and individuals are recognized for excellence in marketing, customer service, and new home sales as well as those who exceed standards in product quality. That is the exactly the kind of team Structures strives to be, so we were thrilled to walk away with two awards!

Our first award was for the Best Product Single Family Home in the $700,000 to $1,000,000 range for 20 Iron Bottom Lane in Daniel Island Park. This beautiful residence was designed by the talented Darryl A. Cobb of Cobb Architecture, and is home to one of our many wonderful clients!

And about our clients…we certainly work with the best, and that is why Structures was so very thankful to also receive the award for Best Customer Service for a Custom Home Builder! We aim to meet the needs of our clients by providing them with a team who understands the client’s priorities and produces a quality, custom home built with integrity and excellence. We could not be more pleased to receive this particular honor, and it’s the one we will certainly be working hard to take home again in 2012!

Reason To Celebrate!

L-R - CTHBA Board Member - Anne Svetlik, SBC Owner - Steve Kendrick,
SBC Designer - Deborah Way & CTHBA Treasurer, Andy Barber

We are excited to announce that our team just received two Pinnacle awards at the Home Builders Association of SC's annual convention! Both awards were given to us for the Coastal Living Idea Cottage. This was the first year we submitted any of our homes on a state level, so you can imagine how awesome it was to hear "Structures Building Company" announced twice during the evening of the Celebration of Excellence!

We received our first award for Green Building - Best Overall and the second award was Green Building - Most Energy Efficient. While we would say we're a "green" builder, our definition of what it means to be green is often very different than what most envision. Green building to us doesn't necessarily mean bamboo floors and dual flush toilets as the buzz word suggests, though we can install those if you'd like. Rather green building to us is actually a healthier, more sustainable and durable way to build a quality home that will withstand Charleston's hot and humid environment. Most of the things that make our homes "green" aren't visible to the eye once the sheetrock goes up, instead they're actually incorporated in design and construction methods. We love taking the time to educate our clients on the different techniques. That way they are able to understand firsthand the science behind it and then choose different construction methods that we have adopted as our standard way of truly protecting the sustainability of their high performance home.

Over six years ago, Steve actually "stumbled" into green building. His vision since 1999 has always been and will continue to be the pursuit of building each home to the highest standard of excellence. According to Webster's dictionary the definition of pinnacle is the "highest point of development and achievement possible". I think it would be a fair and true statement to say that each home we are privileged to build, we build to the highest point of development and achievement possible!

Appreciation Lunch

In order to show their appreciation to all those who have been part of their remodel, our clients in the Crescent in West Ashley hosted a lunch catered by Food for the Southern Soul. Everyone came out on a beautiful Monday afternoon and had their fill of barbecue, red rice, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and sweet tea. It was a wonderful time for everyone to come together and celebrate the hard work that will make this home even more of a dream home for our client.

Renovation in The Crescent

A ReStructures renovation, designed by Architrave, is underway in The Crescent neighborhood in West Ashley. With changes to be seen around every corner and additions to the lower and upper levels, this project will update the space and charm of this greatly loved, existing home. It was fun to look up the carpeted stairwell and see the blue sky!

Too bad you can't see all the work that's taking place on the left side of the house where the master suite/additional upstairs bedrooms are being created behind all the towering trees. Once they are pruned, it will reveal a completely new expanded section! Our favorite part of the renovation process is ensuring that our clients' dreams are realized and accomplished without giving up the location or memories they have already made in their home over the years. The family is so excited to know their life will simply pick back up and continue to take place in the "same" but greatly improved home!

Annual Prism Awards

Each year, we look forward with great anticipation to the Prism Awards. The 22 year old tradition was hosted by the Charleston Trident Home Builders Association on September 24th. This year they presented awards to local home builders and agents who exceed standards in product quality, marketing, new home sales and customer service. The Structures Team aims to build a quality product, no matter the size or budget, that exceeds the expectations along with an incredible building experience that leaves the client raving and surprised that the process could be so fun!

This year, Steven Kendrick was honored with the Green Building award for our Coastal Living Idea Cottage located in I'On Village, Mount Pleasant. Along with the Green Building Award, we received the Single Family Best Product in the 500-700k category.

Too early to begin working towards the awards for 2011? The Structures Team is already preparing for the 23rd Prism Awards as we know that it doesn't come through just an entry submission, but rather a continued dedication to building on the foundation of integrity, which in turn translates into an excellent product and a satisfied client!

Here to Stay!

Congratulations are in order for some very special members of the Structures family, Herb and Dolores Kemp! They were just handed the keys to their Daniel Island Park custom home this month. We couldn't be more excited that they are swapping one "C" for another and making the move from Connecticut to Charleston.

Herb and Dolores built their custom home using Structures' HouseSimple process. We were able to create their "dream cottage" over the course of just three trips to Charleston. Each trip was both fun and productive as we finalized the custom selections for their home. In between trips their email inbox was continually brightened with progressive pictures of the interior and exterior details of their home.

Even with all of the pictures and updates, nothing could have captured the pure joy that spread across Herb and Dolores' faces as they arrived at their new home to take in every detail in person. It was such a pleasure to walk them through and share in their excitement as they pointed out every detail and finishing touch that made this home their own.

So glad we could be a part of truly making Charleston your new home. Can't wait to stop by when you're all settled!

The Greater Prize, Still Being Present. . .

Receiving the award for Best Custom Product for 2-3 million

Since our founding 10 years ago, Structures has entered Charleston’s annual Prism Awards, a ceremony that celebrates the best designs, craftsmanship, customer service and sales in the local building industry. Fortunately, we have walked out of the event with at least one award every year. Some years, frankly, I took it for granted that we should win an award, except for this year. This year was special.

The awards ceremony was held on a shoestring budget, no MC, there was a cash bar, and the feature speaker was our Charleston Trident Home Builders Association’s wonderful president, Tori Martindale of Atlantic Remodeling. Tori spoke about a year that was eerily similar to ours; one that included layoffs, paycuts, benefit cuts and a reduction in overhead that involved consolidating into a home office. The room was quiet and a few tears were shed, as she spoke about the challenges we’ve all faced this year. I also couldn’t help but notice how empty the room was. There were some new faces, but the faces of builder friends were few and far between. Many have lost their businesses or are starting over. Some likely didn’t have much to celebrate this year, it was humbling.

As I sat through the program and awards, I was again humbled as Structures did really well at this year’s event. We were recognized in a diverse group of categories;

1. The award for Affordable Housing for Latoya Palmer’s Habitat Home
2. Charleston’s Green Builder of the Year Award
3. The award for the Best Luxury Built Home for the Behren’s Residence
4. Custom Builder Customer Service Award from GuildQuality

Deborah Way receiving the award for Green Building Company

In receiving these awards, I'm humbled by the tireless determination and standard that comprises those within the Structures family and our amazing team of trades. We all share the same commitment for building “green” custom homes, regardless of size or budget. . . our high standard remains the same.

The awards mean more this year, because honestly, we're humbled and thankful to have made it through another year - a year that's strengthened each of us to the core. . .

Singing in the Rain

When clients select a design/build or custom process with Structures, our job and joy is to cater to the needs and desires specific to their building process. We love taking care of all of the details and over the past 10 years of being in business, we have gained an impeccable reputation for building for the local and out-of-town clients. Our goal is to give each client a building experience where they can love and enjoy the process, and be led with their own on-staff, Design Manager, through the many details that make their home truly custom.

When Mr. and Mrs. Kemp arrived at the Charleston airport to visit their Daniel Island Park custom home, they were greeted with the downpours to our beautiful Charleston. No worries though, the rain wasn't going to rain on our parade... We simply gathered up the golf umbrellas and toured around inside their roofless home answering questions and making little changes to the plans... again, some of the benefits to the custom build process, if we're able to make something happen, we're happy to figure out a way to do it!

Throughout the next day we will enjoy catching up, (like a great family reunion) along with walking them through the custom process of picking out a handful of selections we'll need selected for the next phase of construction that will take place before they fly back down for their upcoming scheduled visit. Hoping the next visit will be just as great as this one, excluding the rain. . . :-)

Nothing Was Going To Rain On Our Parade (Or In This Case, Our Party)

Admiring Bottle Cap Artwork by Molly B. Right.
Chad Besenfelder, Geoff Graham and Steve Kendrick

"Over and above what we expected" is the best way to sum up the Coastal Living Idea Cottage party! After months of planning, every detail of the house was ready for its first debut- the tent arrived (and then a second tent, as it appeared that the clouds and rain would be our uninvited guest) caterer and steel drummer were ready to go, and five minutes after the start of the party, sprinkles began to fall from the sky. We all thought it would affect the attendance, but we estimate that close to 300 guests arrived to take in this beautiful home and celebrate alongside us!Peeking into the Sleeping Nook from the cozy Den
Enjoying the Festivities

Every direction you could see people all around, enjoying themselves and taking in the beautiful colors, designs and decor that local designer, Angie Hranowsky dreamed up for the Caribbean style home. Not to mention the attention to architectural detail by acclaimed, Historical Concepts and beautiful private courtyard design by Kerns Landscape Architecture. The Complete Coastal Living Idea Cottage team. We can't thank the Coastal Living magazine staff enough for making the trip to Charleston for the great celebration, Lindsay Bierman, Editor in Chief, Bill McDougald, VP, Southern Progress Homes Group, Sara Anderson, Executive Editor, Julia Rutland, Senior Editor -Food, Margaret Barnhart, Southeast Account Manager, Corinne Brown, Southeast Director -Travel/Real Estate and Nicole Hendrick, Idea Home Manager who lead so beautifully from start to finish!Lyles and Helen Geer, William Means Real Estate
Deborah Way, Structures Building Company, Tiffany Shanklin and Heidi Stroup of William Means Real Estate

Special thanks to Coastal Living magazine and William Means Real Estate for throwing an amazing party! Helen Lyles Geer, you have an incredible team that planned and took care of every detail from start to finish! We couldn't have done it without the countless hours of Drew Grossklaus, Heidi Stroup, Tiffany Shanklin and Sharon Jackson!

From start to finish, it's been an absolute success! Already the tours are under way and have been well attended for the first two weekends! Don't forget to plan a time to swing by to soak up some fresh ideas and support two amazing charities, East Cooper Habitat for Humanity and East Cooper Montessori Charter School. You may find that you just want to move right in!
