ReStructure on the Beach

At times, significant change can be a really good thing, and we certainly think that's the case for this beach front home on the Isle of Palms.  For our Charlotte, NC clients looking to spend some quality time at the coast, this home has nearly everything:  a sweeping view of the Atlantic, convenient beach access outside their fence, great square footage, and a large lush lot on arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in the Southeast (if you ask anyone around here!)  And those are about the only things our ReStructure team will leave in place!  This Herlong & Associates designed remodel will leave this home almost unrecognizable.  Take a look at some of our progress!

This is the "before" porch, after demolition of the porch, and new foundation in process:

The upstairs formerly included a den with a fireplace (left) and also a master bedroom with a fireplace (right).  The wall between these two rooms and the fireplaces have been removed during demolition (below):

The kitchen and foyer "before" and the kitchen and foyer in process with right wall removed and new stair placement:

Street-side entry "before" and in process:

As you can see, ReStructure is hard at work to make this coastal home the perfect island get-away.  We are really excited to see how this custom home remodeling project continues to take shape!  Check back for updates and to see a final Before and After post!

To the Ends of the Earth. . .

Just a little over a week since I stepped foot back on American soil, I was buckled into four different planes, totaling 24 hours in the air for my return flight and I'm still trying to describe the experience I had in Kolkata, India!  I've been asked many times about my trip and honestly, the only way I know how to truly describe it is by saying, "It was awesome, devastating, beautiful, breath-taking, depressing, hopeless, filled with hope and an unforgettable trip."  There are no words to describe it.  Some of my pictures "might" shed a little more light, but to truly understand India, you have to experience it for yourself and take it in through your five senses. . . without a doubt, it will continue to take time to really process through everything I experienced.
One of the many beautiful faces of India!
Just to give a little glimpse into the city of Kolkata, India, There are 16 million people who live there and 2 million of them live on the streets! Two weeks I was there definitely gave me a different lens through which I view things back home!  Though I "enjoyed" aspects of my trip, I think a better description of the trip would be that it was life changing! I "enjoyed" the children and people I met, the places I was privileged to serve and my favorite aspect was simply loving on those who were so desperate for help. . . that's what I "enjoyed"!

Come take a little photo tour through the sights I took in. . . they won't come close to capturing India, but a least it will give you a little taste of these amazing people!
I love the little pop of color in front of the boys in school uniforms on their way to school in the morning.
A little boy drinking up the last drop of milk at the Dump School.  These children are picked up from an actual dump where they live with their families. We were able to be a part of their lives as they came to this little school where we gave them a bath, taught them English, made a craft, played and share sweet stories of hope with them!
Giving thanks for the daily "bread" he was about to receive.
Being served a hot and healthy meal. . . since they live at the dump, they also eat at/from the dump. They understand the gift of a fresh meal prepared just for them!
Their beautiful colors always amaze me!
 A woman begging.
A family standing outside their home.
 Slum homes.
This is a "normal" sight. . . trash and garbage are seen all over the place.

Having been to Bangalore in 2005 on a medical missions trip, I knew what I was in for as I set out for India again. . . but from what I had heard, Kolkata was supposed to be harder, filthier and more poverty stricken. . . I found that to be true.

This group of boys have been rescued by a sweet India family who have a tremendous heart for boys living to survive at a large train station.  Many have been abused by their parents, have fallen into the "gang life" to try to provide that sense of "family", drugs and they end up living like animals as they "fend" for themselves. Their stories of gratitude, hope and a changed life were absolutely amazing since they really were experiencing a genuine and true love for the first time in their lives.  They didn't take their "adoption" into this awesome and self sacrificing Indian family for granted!
Due to a generous cash gift from a Structures family member and a Structures client, 10 "train station" boys will have new clothes for Christmas! They also enjoyed some yummy ice cream after we took them to a Science Center! Something they had never experienced before!

Teaching in a slum school.
Due to another extremely generous financial gift of someone else from the Structures family and a dear client, over 60 children in this school will have new math and English books!  They were finished with their current books and were specifically praying that their need for new books would be met. . . Wow, were they ever blessed and encouraged!!!

A precious little girl I wanted to bring home with me!!!
Learning to enunciate each letter in the alphabet.

As I said, this can only shed a little light on this huge land of beautiful people. . . I'd jump at the opportunity to sit across a table from each person I know and give them a full verbal and visual rundown of the trip!  It would be full of heart gripping and amazing stories that filled each moment from the time I stepped foot into India until I arrived back home. . .  I'm still so grateful and overwhelmed by the privilege I had to be a part of some really awesome and beautiful things that are taking place in India!

Forever changed. . .

Le Creuset Photo Shoot

Many exciting things are taking place at our most recently completed custom home on Daniel Island. First, it serves as the cover feature on the latest issue of Charleston Style & Design magazine. Second, Le Creuset set up shop in their kitchen and living room this past week for a photo shoot.

Cars lined the streets outside, and Le Creuset's finest products packed the back porch.
Photographer Matthew Scott and his team captured photos for the Le Creuset website.

The table was set multiple times with varying colors of Le Creuset dining ware, cookware, and wine glasses. Iverson Catering used the beautiful kitchen to prepare food for the shoot. We captured a glimpse of the tabletop - stay tuned to Le Creuset's website for the full pictures.

Muddy Boots Marketing Meeting

In preparation for last Sunday's Muddy Boots Open House, Deborah and Anne Marie took their marketing meeting to Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream on Isle of Palms for the annual Free Cone Day. Deborah has been celebrating with Ben and Jerry's for the past 16 years, and this year did not disappoint.

You could say that a lot of details and planning went into our Open House for a custom home in the Old Village - solely based on the number of scoops Deborah and Anne Marie consumed.

The event turned out to be a great opportunity to show our building practices that help create an energy-efficient, sustainable, healthy and more durable home. Thanks to everyone who came out to our Muddy Boots Open House, we enjoyed having you there!

Lot Cleared, Memories Preserved

Welcome the newest members of the Structures family, Mike and Janet McClain! The lot has been cleared for their Old Village Custom Home and with the clearing came an unexpected surprise. A note was found on the driveway from Renee explaining that she lived in the previous house on this lot as a child and left imprints of her hands in the concrete when the driveway was initially instated. With the help of A.B. Evans, we were able to secure the handprints in a block of concrete and return it to her. This lot has preserved many memories and we hope the McClains will continue to make many more.

Happy Holidays - From Our Family to Yours!

I hope this Holiday greeting finds you and your family well as we hopefully slow the pace in this season of celebration! What a year it's been for all of us and I think you'd agree that its been full of opportunities to climb some pretty huge mountains. This year has been so challenging, but let's not forget that it's also come with rewards, maybe they just look a little different than we were all used to. . .

Instead of Ease
- words like Perseverance have taken it's place, instead of Sheer Abundance - words like Gratitude and Simplicity and instead of accidentally taking People/Things for granted - hopefully our thoughts linger a bit longer on those things that truly last, Family, Faith, Freedom. As the Structures Team reflected over the last year, we looked at the huge challenges and then we counted the blessings we carry with us from 2009. From that reflection came some of the words in our photo. Words that helped to carry through this year and we'll take with us into 2010! We stand with smiles, not because this year was a piece of cake, but because in light of the challenge, there is still so much to be grateful for!

What would be your word for this year?

Happy Holidays
from,

Kristy, Amy, Dave, R.P., Deborah & Steve, at Structures Building Company

In construction there are ALWAYS different hiccups, but we like to surround ourselves with a teams of problem-solvers! Mark Riling and his amazing team, William and Eric of East Coast Plumbing and Gas, showed up bright and early with an idea and a solution to our challenge. Relentless to help us achieve a our standard of excellence along with their standard, we found 3 grown men in a tub, well, not really, that's a mental picture we can definitely do without!

A Glance at Aaron's "Feat"

The SBC camera ends up in the oddest places to capture the most unusual sights. . . this was no exception. When the call came in from one of our incredible trade contractors about a leak, without delay, Service Manager, Aaron Austin was on his way to solve the problem. Crutches and cast from his recent injury led him up the huge staircase to the attic access. When we came to the access door, which could only be entered by an 8' ladder, Sales and Marketing Coordinator, Deborah Way made her way up to see if she could find the cause of the leak. As she climbed, she noticed the ladder shifted. Surprised, she turned around to see Aaron was somehow climbing up behind her. After laughing and asking him what he was doing, there was no question that regardless of the cast on his leg, he was going to find the cause of the leak and get it fixed asap. And that he did.
Aaron constantly looks for ways to take customer service the the next rung on the ladder.

Drumming It Up

Dave Hargis, drummer of the band, Kurly Wolf headed up to Virgina to raise money in a benefit concert for Captain James Howard. Dave and James met in middle school and have remained friends even as their lives have taken different paths. Dave moved to Charleston and James served in Iraq as a Captain in the Army and trained to be in the Special Forces. His life was altered earlier this year by a swimming accident that left James paralyzed.

Friends and family members immediately rallied around James and continue to support him through this tragedy. Dave Hargis, Nick and Dennis, members of Kurly Wolf, knew that they wanted to be an integral part of this fundraiser to help lighten the financial burden. We are proud to announce that Kurly Wolf and three other bands raised over $12,000 for James as he continues treatment and rehabilitation.

When Words Just Aren't Enough

Throughout construction, one of our goals as a custom home builder is to help our clients' desires become a reality for a place they will call "home". By simplifying the systems and processes that are often very stressful, we are able to create an enjoyable experience. Just last week, Design Manager, Kristy Gorsuch, was helping I'On clients, Steve and Carol, select light fixtures at a local showroom, when a question came up for a particular placement of one fixture. Stumped for a moment, they tried to visualize how a certain fixture would look in this one location. Our client, Carol, recalled that Sales and Marketing Coordinator, Deborah Way, had just captured the exact place in a weekly photo update that was located in their web-based, Interactive Home Builder account. Logging into their on-line account, they were able to pull up the photo to clearly see the exact location and what should be selected in order to compliment the design of the room. Who would have guessed that a "perk" we've created to keep our out of town clients aware of the intricate details of their ever changing home, would double as an actual resource to selecting their light fixture. In this case, seeing was believing.
