Walk for Muscular Dystrophy

My older brother and mother and I joined my younger brother for his first MD {Muscular Dystrophy }walk , we are going to make this a yearly event from now on , this local walk raised over $40,000.00 , which is amazing ,in only 2 days we raised $170.00 thanks to our family and friends, next year we will start fundraising much earlier , I didn't know about this walk until I read an article in the paper a few days earlier.
It was a nice time spent at the lake participating in a great cause.
I should probably mention my younger brother Brad pictured with me does actually have Muscular Dystrophy , he has Beckers MD , when he was young it was obvious things were not quite right , Brad walked like others but later he had a "different gait" and when he tried to run he would always fall it was like his legs were not made for running , he would always laugh it off , of course the doctors brushed it off , but my mom pushed on and finally at 10 years he was diagnosed with Beckers which is thankfully the mildest form of Muscular Dystrophy , they told us that he would be in a wheel chair by the age of 20 , he is now 34 and still not in a wheel chair , pushing his limits . I admire his strength and courage. You can read his story here at My Beckers Story

WHAT A CHAPTER!

Romans 8, Matthew 5, Philippians 2, Psalm 23, Deuteronomy 6, Exodus 12, Acts 2… these are some of the all time classic chapters of the Bible. But after my devotions this week, I have a new one for my list of favorite chapters, Proverbs 18.

Proverbs means, instead of many words. They are an eclectic collection of wise and godly sayings that are boiled down to just a few words from lifetimes of experience.

So the 18th chapter of Proverbs is not a flowing narrative, but a vast array of nuggets of wisdom, some of which I long to share with you in today’s blog by highlighting them.

1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
4 The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.
5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
6 A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds , and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
(These proverbs are summed up in verse 21)
9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. (when you don’t know where to turn, turn into the castle of God’s safe haven!)
11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty , and before honour is humility. 13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. (gather all the info before you spout off!)
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
(daggers in the heart are always debilitating)
15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
16 A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men. (the way to a person’s heart? Bring a gift!)
17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him. (You just can’t convince some people, it is their way or the highway.)
18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty. (Disagree? Toss a coin, 2 out of three, and call the matter settled.)
19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle. (Best to not be offensive, that is a whole lot easier than damage control.)
20 A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled .
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD. (‘nuff said!)
23 The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.
24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly : and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. (You need friends? Duh! Be friendly.)

See, I told you it was a great chapter.

100 Posts 100 Followers

(check aja postingan yang labelnya 'not important')

Tapi yahh....
Mau bagaimana lagi...

Post #3 from Lindsay: Getting ready to sell

We had a realtor friend of my Mom's over (Cande) to give us an idea about what might be involved in selling our house.
My husband and I decided that the time was ripe to put our home on the market but we really didn't have the foggiest idea about how to do it. It's the first time we've ever done this because the house in question is the first place we've owned.
Cande hadn't ever seen the place before so it was fun to catch up. She got to see our place and meet our daughter for the first time. She asked a few very good questions about our situation. She wanted to know a.) How soon do you want to try and sell your home? b.) Where do you want to relocate to? c.) What will be the asking price of the home?
We wanted to know what we needed to do to show the home as soon as possible. Her answer was to fix a few odds and ends that we had to get to anyway even if we were going to stay and also in an off-hand sort of way "oh and just tidy up the place," and she'd be back the following week to take some photos for the listing.
This last sentence makes me smirk internally. You see, I am a recovering pack rat and my husband is a pack rat in denial. I say recovering because it's a disease that you are never really cured from. The idea of moving makes me cringe at the thought of having to get rid of the stuff one accumulates when one lives in one place for a while.
I like to consider ourselves green individuals. This is just a simple excuse to hang onto everything in case one might use it later. What does a person do about said problem? Call the family for reinforcements. I say family because only they could manage to tolerate doing such a heinous task and they work for unlimited food and beverages.
Over the weekend the family helped us clear the detritus of several years of living in one place. I'm not going to say that it was fun, but boy I guess I wouldn't mind staying so much now that it's done. Wouldn't they be mad if I called them up and said "April Fools!" Ha!

Post #2 from Lindsay: Why Does Anyone Move?

My husband and I have recently acquired a beautiful baby girl who for the last 6 months has joined us on our daily 2-hour commute to our jobs. We live 7 miles from work, however, between us and work lies a giant 300-foot deep, 38-mile long chasm filled with fresh water known as Cayuga Lake.
There have been schemes hatched about getting a boat and working out dockage on both sides of the lake, but due to various logistical barriers, including a boat that just won't run when we get it to water's edge but will start on command within the confines of our yard with no trouble, we have scrapped the idea.
Getting back to our daughter, I have been lucky enough for the first six months of her life to bring her along to work with me. I have wonderful employers. That time now is coming to a close. It's hard for me because I'd really love to keep her at work but she is getting to the point where she needs to have a day care situation.
Truthfully the thought of leaving her with someone else has been one of the biggest heartaches of my life. It's amazing how you change when you become a parent. How someone can have such a death grip on your emotions and yet be so innocent and blissfully unaware of it themselves. You wonder if they will ever know just how much you unconditionally love them. What a sappy mother I am.
So with a new expense at our feet, daycare, one place in our budget that could be trimmed is gas expenses. Other benefits of getting closer to our jobs would be more time in the day not spent in the car. I can tell you for a fact that 2 hours a day of forced confinement with your spouse is good for your relationship but it might be boarder line overkill couples therapy.
We would also be closer to our family who also lives an hour away from our current home. It's time to sell.

Spoleto 2010 Has Something for Everyone!

Take a stroll through any setting from Starbucks to the public library on Calhoun in Historic Downtown Charleston and you are sure to see colorful posters adorning the walls, boasting of Charleston's Spoleto Festival.

If these images don't peak your interest, allow me. Today marks the beginning of the 34th season of Spoleto Festival USA. Over the next 17 days, more than 140 performances will take place throughout the downtown area in venues such as the Gibbes Museum of Art and Dock Street Theatre. Renowned artists as well as emerging performers in opera, theater, dance, and chamber, symphonic, choral and jazz music will fill the charming city of Charleston. I have to admit, one of my all time favorites is simply the "one man band" who stands on the corner just drawing a constant crowd of onlookers.

If you're anything like me you'd want to rearrange your entire schedule to fit in as many shows as possible. The combination of charming Southern hospitality coupled with historic buildings, rich culture, and harbor sunsets will only make the artistic expression more enticing. Hopefully you and I will take time to experience just another great tradition this beautiful city has to offer!

A Love Letter to our House

Dear House,

You were our first house. You were our dream. We needed a place close to work and a place where we could launch our boat to sail on the beautiful lake that you are so near to. We needed a place to plant a vegetable garden, and to have beautiful flowers planted just where we wanted.

We needed a place to call our own, with a big kitchen, a great laundry room, and a place to keep our cars warm and dry in winter. We needed a house with a great porch for summertime grilling and warm insulation to keep us toasty warm in the winter. You have provided that for us.

It's true, there were some things that we improved about you. We didn't like the floors upstairs so we put in laminate flooring. We planned to replace the downstairs flooring with hardwoods Dan sawed himself. We didn't like the old ceilings and lighting in the kitchen and the dining room so we replaced those too. You are a great house and we wish we could pack you too when we move.

We both now have jobs on the other side of that beautiful lake. We don't have time to enjoy your great wrap around porch, or ping pong in that great big garage. We have to move on, I hope you understand. It's not you it's our circumstances. We will find you a new family to enjoy your great virtues. As they say, breaking up is hard to do.

(written by the owner of a VERY wonderful village home, 17 miles north of Ithaca, that will be coming on the market soon...)

Inspiration comes from way back when , well 2002 anyway

It turns out that I am a collector , this was evident when my daughter spilled a glass of water on the tray on our ottoman where I keep two piles of decorating magazines, I leap and started flinging my mags out of harms way , some of these magazine are from the early 2000's , this is the only thing I really collect actually . One much loved magazine in my collection is this 2002 Country Home magazine , the home of Kimber Wysong has been a great source of inspiration for my current home , I actually got a hold of Kimber on Facebook , and she tells me they have long moved on from this lovely home and are now living in a "Beach House" .

Now this is a window box people , and the source of inspiration for mine , which I will admit is much more meek , but mine is not nearly as ample a window box.
I have always been a fan of a Tudor and this one so light and charming is perfection. This fence sealed the deal for me , it pushed the decision for me to tackle building our current picket fence right after we moved here in 2003.
Actually after seeing this off center entry again maybe I should continue my fence and add an entrance arbour?? ok that's a blatant copy.

This is one of the first open shelving kitchens I did see , Kimber was a pioneer , and look at those gorgeous wood counters , they are cherry and the charming painted floors , her two little boys must be teenagers now , it is still as classic a home as ever , wouldn't you love to see her beach home ? I know I would too , I did ask if she would share some photos so I could share with you , I will keep trying , but I don't want to be too stalkerish ...

We are very much enjoying the early arrival of record breaking temps not since 1944 has it been this hot this early , the plants are just loving the warmth and sun , everything is blooming and sprouting in record time. I must say though I feel for the kids and teachers in school this time of year for the lack of air conditioning in the school makes for some sweltering class rooms, I dropped off a very powerful fan that was collecting dust in our basement , they surely can borrow it for the next four weeks of school , if the weather stays like this is is going to be a very long four weeks , I was up in my daughters class room this morning at 7:30 AM and it was so muggy I don't know how they could even stand it , I am glad we have the pool up for them to cool off in after school , freezies and swimming , nothing is more summery to kids.

I just had to show how my little corner of shame in my garden looks now that some time has passed , this is the sweet spot , I wish my whole garden looked this lush , I am working on it , my lovely friend has been donating her split hostas by the bucket full to me , I love a big hosta.

This photo was taken just 8 weeks ago , look how things improve over a short while , all the lovely perennials were just waiting to appear.

Everything is planted now , I went for a colorful scheme in the window box this year, I actually took a photo from a magazine of a window box I loved with me to the garden center and tried to do a scaled back version with similar plants I will add a few more plants I think , it will fill out and improve with time , I will show you the progress.

First Quarter's done, and we're well into the Second... ??

Good grief!Where is this year going!

I recently decided to revitalize my blog (more about that later), so here I am looking at that stupid clock ticking down to -- well, of course, now it's ticking down to New Year's Eve 2010/2011.

Oh, well, Let's review. How's the Real Estate Business in Ithaca? Right now there are 741 residential properties on the market. As of today, the average days on the market is 146. The average selling price here is $184,332, and homes are selling at an average Listing Price to Selling Price of 94.93%.

For an individual agent such as myself? My first quarter surpassed my total sales in 2009; two months into the second quarter I've surpassed first quarter's numbers. And I'm psyched to push forward for my clients, getting them the best price for the homes I'm listing, and the best price for my clients who are ready to buy.

Go to www.CandeCarroll.com to search for YOUR perfect home, or to contact me about how to get your home ready to put on the market and we'll get it listed. Cande@RealtyUSA.com, or just pull out your phone and call me at 607-227-2978

Life is what you make of it!

Prov 15:15 All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast. 16 Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith. 17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

I have observed so many people climbing their ladders of success, but alas, they are leaning against the wrong buildings. Happiness is so illusive to them because they have bought in to Madison Avenue’s formulas for health, wealth and happiness. They are looking for love in all the wrong places. They are on a never-ending search for peace, contentment, satisfaction, joy and fulfillment, but it will never be found in things and circumstances.

They have to learn what the writer of Proverbs is stating. A good, positive attitude cannot help but beget a continual feast of wonder, joy and satisfaction. But the one who is cynical will not find contentment no matter how high the blessings are piled. He is always waiting for the other shoe to fall. He is burdened, not really by circumstances, but by his own rotten attitude.

He needs to learn to find the good things amidst the simple pleasures of life; a simple meal shared with loved ones, a meager existence crowned with God’s countenance. These types of things trump lavish dinners and fancy mansions apart from familial and divine presence.

I received some emails and photos yesterday , the first was from Susan in Ohio , she said that my pergola inspired her to create this over the garage pergola detail , which is amazing what a beautiful addition to this home , cheers to Susan !
I want this exact design above my front window ...he comes another project.

Second was from Stacey who lives a couple of towns over , I did an in home consultation with her in her new home she had literally just moved in , she was so open to change , painting the cabinets removing the corner shelfy thing and curved bulkhead , I also suggested new butcher block counters and an over hang to create counter seating and beadboard of course , well her husband made quick work of a big project , this duo did a great job and now has a stunning kitchen and they have also added value to their home. Cheers to Stacey and hubby!!!

Look at that pretty bulkhead , added crown moulding and matching paint adds height to the room and a cohesive look . They added two pendant light , which look perfect there.
Maybe that center light could become pot lights ???

Gorgeous counters , I wonder how they are treating them?? They sure look great , and BTW they are from Ikea.

Outdoor spaces

If I didn't know any better I would think it was July , it is so darn hot , the kids will be splashing and playing in the pool probably right after school.
I re-painted the trim around the front door , it was dark grey and now it is a soft creamy white , Behr's Vermont Cream I am embracing my cottage look.

If this weather keeps up I may just have to take a dip too , all the hard work we have put into the backyard has really paid off .
